Install and turn it on

A Shopify plan Any paid Shopify plan. Optivo has a free tier of its own; the two are unrelated.
An Online Store 2.0 theme Dawn or any theme released since mid-2021. Vintage themes cannot run app embeds — see the end of this page.
Permissions Enough access to edit your theme, since turning on the embed happens in the theme editor.

Installing Optivo from the Shopify App Store is only half the job. The app embed ships switched off, which is Shopify’s behaviour for every app embed, not something specific to this app. Until you turn it on, your product pages show no option fields at all.

App embed settings belong to one theme, not to your shop. Enabling it on a draft theme does nothing until that theme is published, and publishing a theme that never had it enabled turns it back off.

The button in the app opens your currently published theme. If you are building on an unpublished or duplicated theme, open that one instead: go to Online Store > Themes, click Customize on the theme you want, then follow the written steps below.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Find the theme you want to sell custom options on and click Customize.
  3. In the theme editor’s left sidebar, open App embeds (the puzzle-piece icon at the bottom).
  4. Find Product options in the list and switch its toggle on.
  5. Click Save.

From inside Optivo, Storefront setup in the left navigation has a button that opens the theme editor with this panel already selected, so you can skip steps 1–3.

Optivo ticks this step by itself the first time it sees the widget running on one of your product pages. On the app’s home screen the step will show:

  • Live on your storefront — the widget has been seen running. Nothing more to do.
  • Marked done by you — you confirmed it by hand, but we have not seen it yet. Normal for a shop with no traffic; visit one of your assigned products to confirm.

If your storefront has no traffic yet, use the I’ve enabled it button to mark the step complete manually.

Your theme is a vintage (pre Online Store 2.0) theme. App embeds do not exist there, so Optivo cannot add options to it.

The fix is to move to an Online Store 2.0 theme — a free Shopify theme such as Dawn, or ask your theme developer about upgrading. Optivo will not inject code into your theme files as a workaround, because that is what leaves dead code behind in themes after an app is removed.

The embed is supported on product templates only, including custom product templates. It has no effect on collection, cart, home or page templates, so there is nothing to place or position there.

On a product page, fields appear for that product only if an option set is both assigned to it and published.

Once the embed is on, the remaining three steps are all inside Optivo:

  1. Build an option set — a group of options that belong together. Build your first option set walks it through end to end.
  2. Assign it to products — by hand, or by a rule such as a tag or a collection. See Assigning to products.
  3. Publish it. A set stays in draft until you publish, and a draft renders nothing on the storefront. This is the second most common reason for “I see no fields”. See Drafts and publishing.

Assigned but unpublished shows nothing. Published but unassigned shows nothing. Both, with the embed on, shows your options.

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes and click Customize on the theme.
  2. Open App embeds in the left sidebar.
  3. Switch Product options off, then click Save.

Customers stop seeing option fields immediately. Your option sets, assignments and past order records are untouched, so switching it back on restores everything.
